After seeing photos of the Castelo Penedono in Penedono, Portugal I decided to look at some of my vector textures again and see how they could be incorporated into a repeating pattern that would reflect the geometric shapes found in the building. It was tempting to be very literal and use photos I'd taken of brickwork and walls, but I wanted to be a bit less direct. I ended up using a photo of burlap that I imported into Illustrator, live-traced and then manipulated until I had a texture I liked. For color, I started with the sky, brought in a neutral reminiscent of the walls and then added some stronger colors for contrast.
