Flipping through my Instagram I was surprised to see two images of whales back to back, and even more surprised when another one popped up a few hours later. Then I noticed that every couple of days, I'd randomly see another whale image somewhere.
At dinner the other night a friend brought up Herman Melville & Moby Dick, one of my favorite books from childhood.
And then today Kickstarter projects appeared about whales.
All this made me start thinking about whales, and their place in folklore & legend which I've learned goes back to early Greek and Roman times and continues today in pretty much every culture that lives near an ocean. Growing up near the Pacific in California we'd often see whales when we were out sailing. The last couple of years the whales have been so close to shore that we'd go out just past the Newport jetty and see them. And a couple of weeks ago friends driving up from San Diego spotted Orca's from the beach.
I have no idea what this all means. There are many interpretations of whales appearing in dreams. They can represent a big event in your life, or a strong feeling of solitude. They've been associated with peace, serenity, spirituality and tranquility. They can signify that everything is or will be o.k.when related to spiritual matters. Whales tend to appear in dreams when you are an issue in your life. They can represent power, leadership, and strength and that you can accomplish your goals and have the strength and intuition to overcome obstacles. And finally, they’re a sign of protection and a signal that you need to relax and stop worrying. Which I'm going to do right now!
