The linen fabric on the front of this pillow is created using an adaptation of traditional Japanese shibori techniques. The fabric is is stitched and the stitches are pulled up before multiple dips in a naturally fermented indigo dye vat. This generates parallel stripes of pattern, with an unequal number on the top and bottom to give a balanced design. In the center a piece of vintage Japanese cotton voile has been produced with the same technique, but sewn into circular shapes instead of stripes. This fragment is appliquéd onto the top by hand, with thread that’s been dyed in the same indigo vat. Each piece is unique with variations in color, size, scale and pattern.
